The Double Ninth Festival

The Double Ninth Festival, also called Chongyang Festival in China, is a festival held on the ninth day of the ninth month on the Chinese lunar calendar. It is known as Chong Yang Jie in Chinese because "Chong" means double and "Yang" suggests nine according to the ancient book "YiJing," the Book of Changes.

The Double Ninth Festival

The exact origin of the traditional Double Ninth Festival is unknown but traditional festivities thought to ward off danger and prolong life on the date have been held for centuries. People mark the day by climbing mountains, enjoying chrysanthemum flower exhibits, drinking chrysanthemum flower wine, eating Double Ninth cake and other activities, as has been done for thousands of years.

This year crowds will gather to scale Badachu Park's hills during the annual Double Ninth Festival, as well as attend various opera shows, performances and celebration events in Beijing theaters, parks and other venues. The day is also marked by honoring ancestors and attending to the graves of loved ones.
