Beijing Kite Flying Festival
by Laura Nass, January 17, 2012 | Beijing News

One of the most attended and most unique Beijing events is the Beijing Kite Flying Festival. This event is recognized each year by wonderfully colored kites covering the sky above. Kite flying is over a 100 year tradition in China, and the Beijing Kite Flying Festival carries on this tradition. Continue reading...

The Capital of the People's Republic of China is a city of great heritage as well as being a center of culture, art, education, technology, progress, high-finance and big business. It is also called Peking, and Peking Man lived in the same spot as the modern city over a quarter of a million years ago.

It is rather less a city than a metropolis, which, with a population of around twenty million, is no misnomer. The metropolis is famous for preserving its heritage and the architecture associated with it. The Forbidden City is located right in the middle and is one of the world's most astounding World Heritage Sites; as it's been made by UNESCO who also state that it's the largest complex of preserved wooden buildings, ancient ones of course, in one location. The Forbidden City has been around for centuries and has been home to many emperors. You can easily find a hotel, luxury or budget, close to the Forbidden City, just as you can book a room with a view of the Great Wall of China; well parts of it anyway, those parts which sit close or on the city boundaries. But if you're located close to the city center, you'll be positioned not only near the Forbidden City, but close to Tiananmen Square. From here it's easy to have quick access to the best of local culture and entertainment.

There are many superb four and five-star hotels in the city, as well as those which offer pleasant rooms and useful services but don't have the same impact on the bank balance. There are also other kinds of hotels ranging from boutique-style lodgings to luxury apartments. If you want the proper heritage experience, then book into a courtyard hotel, which will immediately transport you back to a golden era of emperor-style luxuriousness that reflects the city of grand palaces which wait to viewed and explored in every direction. Many hotels will offer you the option to rent a bicycle and this is a fine way to see the sights and enjoy this ancient and marvelous place. Just ask at the front desk about what to see and do. They'll be able to point you in the direction of, or even book tickets for, the Peking Opera or maybe organize a tour for you which includes visiting The Temple of Heaven, which dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. When you've seen where the emperors lived and prayed, then visit the Thirteen Tombs, where many of these venerable leaders are buried.

If you're one of the fortunate who will be booking into a five-star luxury hotel, then you'll have an experience to put to shame the hospitality of other great metropolises. Never mind the astounding services and facilities that are found at all the grand establishments, this is a nation of meticulous service and attention to detail. Unless you know the city and can easily navigate the six ring roads to arrive at your hotel, you'll probably want to take advantage of an airport pick-up service. Then you'll be taken straight to either your modern or heritage-suffused hotel. Many places offer round-the-clock butler services, which is great if you arrive late at night or, as is properly stated, early in the morning. All late arrivals and night owls will appreciate 24-hour room service, which brings us to the food.

There are no better places to eat if you're a fan of Chinese cuisine. This is the city which gave its name to Peking Duck, which is now a national dish and is number 5 on the list of the world's tastiest dishes. A city still filled with reverence for its ancestors and emperors, you will eat like royalty. Like most of China, Beijing has it own regional cuisine and this is well represented throughout the city. But if you want to veer away from the Chinese cookery for a meal or two, you'll find that most of the good hotels offer cuisine from Europe, including French fine dining, which might very well be prepared by a world-class award-winning chef. You'll also find, among others, casual Mediterranean and American restaurants.

Rooms and suites in Beijing's luxury hotels are almost always impressively designed, and whether you want a modern interior or one which reflects the heritage architecture of the building in which you're staying, you'll have the finest linens and furnishings. All you have to do is pick your preferred style and then inhabit a space of sensory indulgence.

Head to your hotel's rooftop swimming pool or just wait until the sun sets and the trendy hotel bars come alive with music and people. Whatever your reason for visiting this great and ancient destination, there is always something to do, a way to please the senses and inspire the spirit.
